Senior Manager, Talent Management

We also transform community health through mobile phones.  Using the disruptive power of mobile technology, we’ve equipped and deployed 7,500 community health workers across Africa.  These community health workers treat common illnesses like pneumonia, diarrhea, and malaria.  They also provide primary healthcare to 6 million people at a fraction of the cost of doctors and nurses.  And they’ve reduced child mortality by 27 percent.

People & Culture

We know that our work at Living Goods depends on more than careful research and creative ideas.  It also depends on great people.  That’s why we’ve been adding more people every month for four years. Already this year we’ve hired 100 new people.  There are now 400 Living Goods employees working in Uganda, Kenya and the US. Three years from now, there’ll be 1,000.

The Opportunity

Like a field of beautiful wildflowers, we want our employees to adapt, grow, and thrive.  To help cultivate them, we’ve created the new role of Landscape Architecht – also known as Senior Manager, Talent Management. 

We’re looking for someone to grow a global talent management program.  To create an onboarding program that bursts with sunshine.  A vibrant e-learning program that helps people keep learning. A leadership program to identify high performers and prepare them for future roles.

Create a capability inventory.  You will lead an organization-wide review of employee capabilities and anticipated needs.  This internal people audit will help you develop leadership and development technical programs.  It will also guide the talent acquisition team in their search for new talent.

Keep great people.  We’re growing so we need you to make sure employees grow with us.  This means identifying paths for employees to get promoted, internal secondments to learn about different departments, and stretch assignments in new areas.

Develop managers.  We need you to teach managers how to retain great people.  You will create a mentor and coaching program for managers.  You will also identify management e-learning courses and in-person seminars. 

Grow great leaders.  You will design leadership and development programs that cut across levels and departments.  You will also lead a global succession planning process to identify high performers and prepare them for leadership roles.

Design new age apprenticeships.  You will develop talent feeder programs, like graduate and internship programs.  These programs can be conventional -- like pairing promising recent graduates with current Living Goods employees onsite.  They may also be unconventional – like real-time challenges that we find teams of interns to address virtually.

Usher in e-learning. E-learning courses and seminars have exploded and we need you to decide which constellations to tap into.  Whether its one-time webinars, or MBA courses, or virtual symposia, we look to you to identify cutting edge e-learning opportunities for Living Goods employees.

Manage performance.  You will apply the same rigorous methodology to evaluate employee performance that we use to track sales and motivate community health workers.  The Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) you identify will guide performance appraisals and help managers and employees develop ways to learn and improve.

Your Background

  • Africa talent development skills.  You have 10+ years of experience in human resources (HR) or, even better – working in talent management and learning. Management experience of at least 3 years' gained in a best-practice environment. You know the latest trends and approaches to assess employee performance and to help staff learn, grow, and thrive.  You have a bachelor’s degree or even better -- an MS, MA or MBA.
  • Strategic initiative. You know how to assess talent and capability of staff and can identify creative ways for employees to learn and improve.   You can translate organizational strategy into talent development plans. 
  • Designer.  You’ve developed new programs in talent assessment, leadership development, e-learning, or organizational development.  
  • Coaching skills.  Gaining trust is second nature to you.  You know how to help senior leaders and executives improve employee knowledge and performance.
  • Consulting mindset.  You have a laser like focus on helping internal customers while respecting organizational policies and procedures. You can change the HR paradigm from “you can’t do that” to “yes we can.”  
  • Gets our model. Living Goods is a hybrid model.  We’re a nonprofit organization with a business minded approach.  We use business practices to achieve social goals.  We love candidates with for-profit & nonprofit work experience.
