Senior Manager, Human Resources Business Partner

Living Goods works to reinvent how we improve the lives of the under-served. We think big, but operate small and nimble. We train community health workers to bring life-saving products and healthcare to people’s doorsteps.   Products like medicines, fortified foods, and modern contraceptives. 

We also transform community health through mobile phones.   We teach community health workers how to assess maternal and child health and treat common illnesses like pneumonia, malaria, malnutrition, and diarrhea. We also develop smart phone apps to guide community health worker visits and create predictive algorithms to make the best use of their time.  And we test new tools like paperless referrals to clinics and biosensors to monitor infant and child growth.

Human Resources

We know that our work at Living Goods depends on more than careful research and creative ideas.  It also requires great people.  That’s why we’ve been adding more people every month for four years.

Living Goods has a team of over 150 employees in Uganda and will grow to 340 by 2021.  This year we will serve 5 million people in Uganda.  In four years we’ll serve 15 million.  We’re growing because we’ve honed a model that works and we know our mission: to ensure that every mother and child has basic healthcare in their community.

Your Charge

We need you to help us keep our great people.  Provide counsel on thorny personnel issues.  Promote a fun and inclusive workplace. Create competitive compensation packages.

  • Develop strategy.  We need you to translate business goals into a people strategy for Uganda.  Working with managers, you will forecast the number and type of staff Living Goods needs in Uganda. You will adapt global policies to the  local context.
  • Build a culture based on our values.  Working with the Uganda leadership teams, you will champion our organizational culture in Uganda, striving to create a positive and productive workplace.  One that values hard work, feedback and continuous improvement, inclusion and commitment.  You will further our progress towards becoming a Great Place to Work ™
  • Recognize and reward greatness.  You will develop creative ways to celebrate employee effort and reward results.   
  • Keep great people. You will develop and spearhead our efforts to identify and manage talent.
  • Promote learning. You will work across the organization to identify training needs and develop creative approaches to addressing the gaps.
  • Coach managers.  We need you to help managers learn how to best guide and motivate employees in Uganda .  You will guide managers on how to address performance issues in ways that preserve employee dignity and promote productivity. 
  • Make sure we play by the rules.  You will serve as the chief human resources compliance officer in Uganda.  You will oversee internal and external audits and ensure reporting to relevant audiences.

Your background

  • Human resources acumen.  You have at least 8 years of human resources experience in Uganda.  Your experience is in a variety of areas, such as employee relations, compensation and benefits, engagement, career development and performance management.  You have a basic understanding of Uganda’s employment law and a relevant bachelors degree or higher.
  • Leadership skills.  You have a track record of leading human resources initiatives and of managing change in a growing environment.  Your knowledge and gravitas makes you a trusted partner to senior managers.
  • Global organization experience.  You have experience in an international company or NGO.
  • Customer service skills.  Like the acronym “HR,” our team is both human and resourceful.  Your can-do spirit shifts the HR paradigm from “you can’t do that” to “yes we can.”
  • Lives our values. You can thrive in our culture – you can demonstrate inclusion, integrity, innovation, quick footedness, collaboration, and accountability.   
  • Team player.  You play well with others enjoy seeing the impact of our work as a team.
  • Multitasks.  You’re able to juggle multiple tasks at once while ‘staying calm and carrying on.’  You think strategically, handle ambiguity and work well in a multicultural environment.
